L&CAFL 3-1 Whalley Range
L&CAFL Centenary Cup at Bedians Sports, Didsbury; attendance about 45
All those initials stand for the
Lancashire & Cheshire Amateur Football League, and they have a representative side and this a warm up game for the side who will compete in the
The FA National League System Cup next month. Until recently I didn't know all this malarkey went on. Nor did I know about this annual cup fixture. Apparently this is the second year, though nobody knew who won it last year and the teams looked a bit surprised there was a cup at the end of the game.
Intrigued I thought I'd get down Millgate Lane to Bedians Sports Grounds. Apart from the background hum of motorway traffic beyond the distant trees you would think this was the countryside. In times gone this was an important road to Manchester with pack horses bringing salt from Cheshire crossing a ford over the River Mersey at the end of the lane. It's now a narrow quiet no through way.
An 1830h kick off and here with my takeaway - mixed vegetables Szechuan style, fried rice and the world's smallest plastic fork. I have to eat the rice with my fingers because the match would be over trying to lift grains with the doll's house cutlery.
Whalley Range are in their usual red and black uniform and for a while I thought they were having the better of the match. The League XI are in yellow and blue and appear to be playing a 4-4-2 formation. What do I know? The League XI score a couple of good goals in the first half, and it would have been more if Whalley Range hadn't been repeatedly playing them off side .
There is a five minute break for half time. I watch the youngsters doing rugby training behind me. They also do Gaelic football down here. It looks a well organised set up - club house, a well kept football pitch, three rugby pitches and another football pitch. Not so sure about having long grass behind the far goal. I'd get the mower out to it because it's probably eating footballs.
Whalley Range do lots of substitutions in the second half and press ahead. For the effort they deserve a goal. They get one and it's a scrappy kick about in the box but not before going 3 nil down.
At the end there is a very brief presentation of the cup. The players are keen to get off the pitch but they get their shirts back on and huddle about. An entertaining game. I head off for the 7 minute walk to the bus stop. Maybe I'll get home to see the second half of the Netherlands v. England friendly. Why do ITV keep calling the country Holland. That's like thinking Great Britain is England. What about Friesland?
Admission free, no programme available, bus fare £3.50, takaway £5.10.
Temperature 20 down to 17 degrees C, no wind. I'd like to barometric pressure, humidity and visibility but that's taking the Shipping Forecast a field too far.
