Sloppy start gripping finish

United 3-3 CSKA Moscow
UEFA Champions League Group Stage; attendance 73,718
A game that went from one hour of woeful to half an hour of hopeful. A cold dark night with showery spells, this is a night out for the faithful supporter or the curious tourist who has picked up a ticket on general sale.

The first half was pretty dreadful. Yawningly dull until Moscow scored. You know it's dull when the background scenery comes into your mind. Like the fluffy microphones around the pitch in various colours like red, blue and white. The bloke a row back on his mobile phone with a conversation of where are you? Are you near me? The later must be the dumbest question. Unless you're wearing a ridiculous illuminating hat there is little chance to spot someone in a big seated crowd.

Second half started badly. Now 1-3 down to yet another soft goal. Shocking defending. The crowd chants for Rooney to come on, eventually he's on the touch line and Nani departs. At last some urgency in the play, moved up to third gear at last. Now with 30 minutes left I think we can score 3 and win it, at 15 minutes left I'm settling for 2 goals and a point. At 88 minutes just one goal will make the score a bit respectable.

But no, Scholes gets a blinding header at the end of normal time. Another 4 minutes added time is announced, time for another goal then. Valencia scores from a rocket shot outside the area. That will shut some of critics up.

That's it, through to the knock out stages, just got to come back and see them play Besiktas. Not look forward to that one, might play even more slow and sloppy than tonight.

Man of the match for me was Johnny Evans for his excellent defending when everyone else was attacking. If it had gone to 1-4 down it would have been all over. Akinfeev the Moscow goalie was on form, even stopping a cannonball shot from Scholes, the sort that nearly breaks the nets.
