Poor Performance

United 2-2 Sunderland
Premiership 2009/10; attendance 75,114
This was a game I expected to be won by a couple of goals. Essentially very lucky to get even a point. Sunderland came and played two up front, and as we saw had a good defence with height to win the headers. United were out of sorts. No movement off the ball. Standing around waiting for a pass that never arrived. Worse for me is when a player is out on the wings with three opponents around him then and go and help out and collect a short pass.

Two bright spells in the second half when Anderson came on and Berbatov got stuck in. But overall Sunderland were the better team on the pitch. As for Foster in nets getting a bit concerned with his presence in the box. They might teach shot stopping and taking high crosses at goalie school but you need confidence and skills to deal with balls at the edge of the penalty area. Sometimes you have to leave your area to deal with an underhit back pass. Great goalkeepers use the full box and beyond and shout at the defence.

The dying minutes were the best in the whole game. Just equalised by an own goal after putting the defence under a barrage of shots and crosses. I think it was four successive corners as United pressed for a winner. If it had gone in the reports would read a lot different and two points wouldn't have been thrown away.

Oh well, an off day on the park. We stomped the 23 minutes walk back to the car analysing what went wrong. A bright full moon in the dark evening sky and the wind had stopped.
