Trafford Trip for FCUM

Trafford 1-2 FC United
Pre-season friendly; attendance
est: 400
Crowd at Trafford
Nothing on the Tv box and feeling a need to get out so why not get along to that football ground. It's about a 5km drive to Flixton in the light drizzle. We're last minute, the car park is full, no programme sellers about, it's just kicked off.

We take up position behind the end nearest to Stretford as it has cover. A very mini "Stretford End" except you have a couple of hundred people who spend the time chatting and having a bit of banter with Sam Ashton the FC goalie. These are just friendlies but this look likes more the team who will play on Saturday against Boston United.

The first half is livened up by a goal for FC at the far end, could barely see it so we're hoping for some more to show what the team can do. Trafford have a few attacks and Sam Ashton makes some saves at close range to the delight of the crowd.

Second half, still in position behind the goal. It's a restricted view with the big Trafford goalie, goalposts and the metal work of the shed in the way. Ten minutes in wholesale changes to the FC United line-up but the Biffa herself is happy that Carlos Rocca in the No.7 shirt is still on.

Can't remember anything about FC's second goal. Note to memory try and concentrate even if it's a friendly. Trafford pull one back near the end. The Biffa wants to get a quick getaway and not get stuck behind a hundred cars so we drift up to grassy bank nearer the exit.

I think both sides will be please with their run-out tonight, and the fans still have that start of season expectancy of great things before them. Like cup runs and promotions. The optimism of August is with me.

Admission £5, no programme, "guess 1st goal ticket" £1 (got 80th minute away side - never win this and the bloke who sells it to me always says "you never know".
Temperature 21 - falling to 16 degrees C, drizzle in first half, no wind.
