Go to a FC United friendly
Maine Road 2-1 FC United
Pre-season friendly; attendance 400
Got a twinge of excitement as I cycled home thinking that I'd be going to my first game of the season. It's been over two months without football. Well apart from an outdoors 5 a side game in Italy. More about that another time....
Got there a minute or two after kick off. It's only a friendly so punctuality is not compulsory. The Biffa herself came along and we stood to the side of the goal which FC United were attacking. Eventually we got a FC United goal and that was the highlight of the night for me. The Biffa herself missed it, going off to the little tea hut for some confectionery.
Maine Road picked up their game after this and promptly equalised. After that FC United came close on the odd occasion but Maine Road looked the better organised team. They were awarded a penalty in the second half and got a goal from the re-bound. But we were at the wrong end and thought it had been saved. So did everyone else at our end and there are 30 supporters with jaws dropped in puzzlement as the ball is put onto the centre spot. That's non-league for you. Blink and you miss it.
There was another good bit. Maine Road did a back pass to the goalkeeper and an indirect free kick for FC United. You don't often see these and when you do they rarely result in a goal. Same this time - it went wide and over.
During the dull-ish bits of the game we marvelled at the grey billowing clouds spread across the sky like a ruffled blanket. The red lights on the distant Beetham Tower (168.87 m high) got brighter as the darkness set in. Then got to thinking about all the spare grassland at the back of the ground - it would make a great allotment. So much clover in it that it'll be a nitrogen rich soil by now.
We drifted back to the car knowing I'd be doing this another 50 times this season and most of them after better games and harsher weather.
Admission £5, no programme available, confectionery 50p. Temperature 20 degrees C, wind force 0-1, direction SSW.

Hi there,
I was wondering if you could do me a massive favour and tell me who scored the Maine Road penalty. I can't seem to find it out anywhere else.
Thanks and nice report.
Sorry I don't know. No programme, no team announcements, it was at the far end. I'll never make a sports reporter.
Oh well no worries. Thanks anyway.
