Friendly out the back
West Didsbury & Chorlton 0-0 Gregorians
Pre-Season Friendly; attendance about 18
Made tea to sit in the pans for later. If you're not from the north tea is the evening meal and you might even say something weird like "a spot of supper". Thought I'd nip over the road, cutting through some one's garden to watch a match. A 1830h kick off, and the Biffa herself wouldn't be home until at least 2000h.
A tight match and my local side held its own against a club from a higher division. Not many attempts on goal. Interesting bits to note. Picked up the stories of the planned expansion - a proper community football club on my doorstep and an all weather pitch. Hope it gets the green light from planning, and the NIMBY types keep their beaks out. The Gregorians goalie only did 20 minutes and then went off in his car. Fortunately they had another lad with a No.1 on his shirt. He made a good save in the second half. A low flying aircraft circled the pitch - not a plane spotter but it was very, very small but with long wings and two propellors if that helps. That's friendly matches - you welcome any distraction from basically a fitness work out on the grass.
Rob the dynamo organiser of West Didsbury collared me about this blog. Bit taken back, only the third person I've met who has ever read it. Three out of 25 ain't bad. I've been praising Whalley Range FC's club house! They are a rival near neighbours but in the Lancashire & Cheshire League.
Game over the players did the warm down. Fitness is the key. Gone are the days of a cup of tea and a cig' after 90 minutes, even at this level. Went home to warm the food and watch Coronation Street - still can't understand why it's been moved to a Thursday. Back on the 19th for the match against Govan Athletic - seen them a couple of times before, I just like the idea of a team named after Sir Alex's home town coming from Romilley, Stockport.
Admission : free, no programme available.
Temperature 21 degrees C, no wind, warm summer's evening.

I'm not sure why you think this would be a good thing biffa - its not as if you are not already very very well served for football pitches in your area - approx 70-80 pitches across from wythenshawe fields over the mersey down to hough end and of course turn moss, junior pitches up at chorlton park as well as at hough end. what we don't have is a whole lot of open spaces, space that can grow wild.
I love the website biffa and love football, but i cannot in anyway shape or form see how a privately owned, floodlit sports complex is what that area needs.
Good point. I have seen the plans since then and they do look somewhat on a larger scale I was led to believe. Though maybe that is the intention - ask for 8, settle for 4 tactic, which is what you wanted all along.
This is going to be an interesting and possibly bitter planning application. There was a similar one for Turn Moss about 5 years ago at Trafford Council. Not made up my mind yet until I see the actual planning application.
as i say i love football, and like you this would be handy for me but i can't see why if existing pitches can't be upgraded - last night i started to tot up the amount of pitches in a 1.5 mile radius of the proposed site - this is what i have so far and this is not including schools like willam hulme and whalley range:

I don't suppose you know who owns brantingham road now? its Maine rds ground isn't it? It used to be owned by manchester FA - but no longer so i believe. Or that pitch by jacksons boat?
sorry - link not working, try this:
