Happy Ending but Nearly Nothing
United 3-2 Aston Villa
Premiership 2008/09; attendance 75,406
A must, must, win game but it nearly didn't come off. Nine to the line, every point needed to retain the Premiership. So we have this 1600h kick-off to look forward to all day. But you have most of the first choice players injured or suspended. Don't think about it just turn up and let's hope the team turns up too.
Instead of mooching around the house for hours we took ourselves off to the cinema across the Ship Canal from Old Trafford. It's situated in the Lowry Outlet Shopping Mall which supposedly sells designer clothing at bargain prices. So how come everyone in there is so badly dressed. Lumpy fashion victims having a day-out. We go and see "The Damned United". Great film but unfortunately you waste 25 minutes of your life watching adverts and trailers for Hollywood formula before it starts.
Let's get to the match. This game will be remembered for Federico Macheda coming on late as the debut sub and scoring an injury time winner. Brilliant curling goal. The other two by Ronaldo were pretty good too. I've seen those indirect free kicks given for a back pass to the goalie a few times. Never seen anyone score from one because it is too close to goal to get over masses of bodies. The second a late equaliser was such a slow subtle shot. I was watching it literally trickle into the bottom corner beyond reach.
But when Villa were 2-1 up it was a long twenty minutes looking defeat in the face. The defence looked very vunerable all match, Carrew from Villa looked even taller than he does on Tv, and you thought just where is our goal going to come from.
Interesting bits : Very, very lucky to take any points from the game. The 4th official announces 5 minutes added time - it always undermines the opposition. Just like the old days of standing, shouting and willing your team to one last gasp effort. Fortunately Macheda did the business in that second minute. I liked the way he ran into the crowd to see his family and friends. Also the half time entertainment of very young lads some too small for their kit having a small pitch kick about. It was in United v. Villa colours and we won that one 3-1 though I counted it as 4-2. The crowd loved it with big cheers.
Went home happy, could watch the highlights on Tv at 2225h, could face going to work the next day.
