Great Win at Newcastle

Newcastle United 1-2 United
Premiership 2008/09 attendance 51,636
What a great win, now seven points ahead at the top of table with a game in hand and that's Portsmouth at home. The match was 25 minutes old before I tuned in. Got my kick-off time mixed up. Sometimes it's 2000h, and this was at 1945h. A shock to hear we're trailing 1-nil.

Must say I do enjoy radio commentary, especially BBC Radio FiveLive. We chose the AM broadcast instead of the crisp DAB alternative. Reception coming through big speakers with Sky Sports News on mute taking you round the games and the goal flashes. Call it a fusion of warm nostalgia coupled with modern digital.

The other point about radio is it's the fastest at delivering the match. The roars of the crowd tell you what happens before the commentator can say his words. The match sounded a thriller and was very tempted to nip to the pub and watch it on dodgy Albanian Tv - "it's on the foreign" as some bar staff refer to it. For the second half I opted for the streaming service to my laptop. Somebody was relaying it from far away on Sopcast. From very far away, it lagged two minutes behind the radio commentary.

When Berbatov got the winner I shouted to the Biffa herself "we're in front, Berba has just scored, come and watch it". Eventually it turned up on the streaming video.

If there is another game on the radio and not on UK Tv going to fire up my old valve radio - it does Medium & Long Wave and was made by Ferranti probably in the 1950's. Sat on the edge of the armchair, cup of tea, packets of biscuits that'll be Garibaldi and Ginger Nuts, willing your team to three more points.

To the few readers of this weblog I'm not going to do much in match reports in future - more what it's like to follow the footie. On a not so controversial point, is Wayne Rooney getting man-boobs? He took his short off at the end to reveal a figure hugging wind resistant red top and it looked like them to me. Anyway he's on fire at the moment and eats very sensible so it can't be?
