Ciao Inter
United 2-0 Internationale
UEFA Championships League; attendance 74,769
Last 32 aggregate score 2-0

A day of apprehension about this tie. The Premiership is a top class league but when you get to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League you're at a higher plateau. It doesn't get better than a big night of European football. The traffic was busier than usual, the pavements were more crowded and the fans more keen to get to their seat. Yet the ground still holds the same number of people. But this wasn't a tourist game - the birthday treat of going to the Mega store and getting there early. Nor the Haribo game when there are parents with young kiddies drifting along. We call them Haribo games 'cos it is the crap sweets they sell to young'uns at football grounds. This was fans who could remember 1999 and had taken up their option for a cup ticket and not let it be available on open sale.

Atmosphere electric, noise level back to the old days, singing and some scarf twirling. Wish there was more flag waving. We had to stand throughout the entire game. It's the section of the Stretford End we are in. Everybody else can see just as well sat down with a bit of jumping up when the action gets close up.
First goal after about 4 minutes at the far end - Vidic from a corner. Elation. But as the half went on Inter came back into it. They had chances, they came close a bit too close to scoring. Glad it got to half time still in front. If it goes to 1-1 they win on away goals.
Second half and United line up, the ref and liners are in place, the ball is in the centre. No Inter and for a minute they kept everyone waiting. Maybe it's a tactic. They attacked straight away. But out of blue Giggs did some brilliant dribbling with the ball across the front of their box. It was old school dribbling hemmed in by three defenders. The following goal was one of the best I've seen. Pass to Rooney, who chips the ball back and up. Ronaldo leaps a foot above everyone else to head it home.

Best songs were for Mr. Mourinho - "You're not special anymore" and at the end "Bye, bye Mourinho" to which he waved to the crowd. He's a character, like his choice of quality coat, a stylish manager.
Bit of crush to get across the Stretford End bridge as everyone had stayed to the end. Felt drained after this match. Better drained than disappointed.
But why arn't the highlights available on Sky after the Wednesday game? Watched the Roma v. Arsenal penalty shootout with a good glass of French red - I wonder if Fergie was doing the same with Mourinho in the office.

Glad you think the 2nd was one of the best you have seen.
I though the Rooney pass/cross was the best I've ever seen - I was expecting a typical hammer shot from Wayne, but the chip cross - no back swing, so totally unexpected - straight onto Ronaldo's head was fantastic.
yeah, I've not blogged for ages - sue me; I've had a busy winter
Don't remember many goals and i always think of an Andy Cole overhead kick against some Premiership team when I write this, but in a few weeks this memorey will fade.
Miss your blog - good writing style and you don't even have decent tap water down there.
