Events in Darwen and Milan
Always like the contrast in football. Well I go to see world class players at Old Trafford one day. The future in the Reserve side usually on a Thursday. Then bob about quite a few games at the other end of the pyramid with teams like FC United, Trafford, Maine Road, and Altrincham.
Been following the possible winding-up of Darwen for the past couple of weeks. 134 years of football history all over for a £9,000 debt to a tool hire company. Looks like at the last minute the club will be saved and be run by the fans. That's what they do with clubs that don't make money - hand them to the fans and walk away. They'll need more than the 77 who turned up last Saturday to see what was billed as their last game against AFC Blackpool. Checked my flimsy records and I don't think I saw them when FC United would have played them. That was back in their Vodkat North West Counties League seasons. Must make amends in a few weeks when they field a team against Cheadle Town not far from home.
Now for Milan, and it's the Derby della Madonnina this weekend. You'd never get a fixture called after Our Lady, in England but that's Italy for you. They also switch all the games to a Saturday at Easter. No chance of playing on a Sunday that weekend.
Serie A is not on Tv in England this season but the BBC have bought the rights to show just the Milan game. I reckon it is all down to David Beckham appearing for AC Milan, at least the broadcasters must be hoping for that. It's on BBC3 at 1930h (GMT / UCT) this Sunday 15th. Just got time to make dinner after the Derby County v. United, FA Cup clash on ITV1, 1630h kick off. Let's hope United win 'cos a draw or a defeat will ruin my evening. Don't say it can't happen - the road to Wembley is full of what might have been.
