Salford Football Art

Salford Art Gallery is always a nice place to visit. You can always get a parking slot, it's never too crowded as all the tourists go to The Lowry. I've put myself down for a visit this weekend because there is some football related art.

First there is "Michael Browne's latest work depicting George Best as a spiritual figure ascending to Heaven". Based on Raphael's 'The Transfiguration', and already some church people types have been whingeing about it. It should pull a few punters in now. A few years ago I saw his paintings of Eric Cantona and David Beckham in Manchester City Art Gallery. They were very big and very impressive.

Also there is an exhibition of Harold Riley's football pictures. Many of them are based on scenes at Old Trafford. Apparently he has his own seating area at the ground to do his sketches. Though how you can draw and watch a match is beyond me. It's showing until 15th February 2009.

So a good win against Stoke City on Saturday, and a bit of culture on Sunday.
