World's Oldest Football

It's getting a trip to Hamburg for the World Cup. The ball - not much bigger than a modern-day lawn bowl - was discovered in the 1970s tucked behind the oak-panelled walls of the bed chamber used by Mary Queen of Scots in the 16th century.

Experts believe she kicked it around Stirling Castle with courtiers and threw it from her private balcony to start matches between royal staff or soldiers.

It was tested at the National Museum of Scotland where it was confirmed as the oldest in existence, dating from between 1540 and 1570, when the panelling was installed.
